Helluva Hill

I crossed the North Cascades yesterday on a long, long hill.

What is long? How about 30 miles and 4500 feet of elevation gain. There was even a tunnel.

A good part of it wasn't too steep but just around the time I was starting to hurt, the grade increased so I was crawling in my lowest gear.

A climb like this a couple of weeks into a tour wouldn't be so bad but today was day four. Still, I held up better than I thought I would and even passed, no I think the more appropriate term would be blew by, two men also on a tour. I finally made Washington Pass at 5477 ft high.

It's been ideal weather. Cloudy and cool, though yesterday there was quite a bit of sun. I passed Rainy Pass where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses highway 20 and remembered the spot well. I've now walked across North Cascades National Park from south to north and biked it from west to east.

Today I continue over Loup Loup Pass though this one will be only 2000 feet of climbing and will only ride about 55 miles so i can afford a lazy start. I'm currently sitting in the 'Oldest Legal Saloon in Washington State' in Winslow, eating an omelet and watching it rain.
