Yet Another Pass to Climb

The ride is going pretty well so far, despite the flat tire blues. It's warm, around 82 degrees and currently sunny though yesterday I had a few short rain showers. I took a short day yesterday (20 or so miles) and sat in a nice park by the Okanagan River and read. My legs and especially my butt needed a break and I've learned the hard way to listen to my body and do as it asks.

I've definitely entered The High Eastern Desert.

The air smells wonderfully of sagebrush especially after a brief rain. It's cowboy country, too. This was a neat statue in Winthrop.

I shared a campsite with Dan, a fellow cyclist heading east and then maybe north. We had breakfast together where he told
me a story about a huge mosquito that almost carried him and his very, very tiny one person tent away.

I am currently in Tonasket and will soon be climbing Wauconda Pass. I have to go home for a few days so I'll turn south from Republic, the town on the other side of the pass, and ride along the Sanpoil River. I rode that road going north two summers ago and remember it being pretty and quiet. I'll cross FDR lake on a ferry and then will ride east to Spokane where I'll catch a train home. I'll leave Sam someplace safe and will fly back to continue my ride east.
